Tomball Regional Medical Center Celebrates Healthy Woman’s First Anniversary Celebration with nationally recognized speaker Elizabeth Smart

(TOMBALL, TX) May 8, 2013— TRMC’s Healthy Woman program will celebrate the first anniversary on May 9, 2013, where guests will hear the inspirational story of kidnapping survivor Elizabeth Smart. Her topic is “Overcoming Adversity” and the event will take place at the Berry Center (8877 Barker Cypress, Cypress) offering a free health screenings and a wide variety of partner booths featuring products and services of interest to women.

For women, fulfilling the varied roles and responsibilities required of them – mother, daughter, caregiver, friend, mentor, volunteer or career professional, not to mention finding time to care for themselves – is a challenge. Tomball Regional Medical Center (TRMC) launched Healthy Woman, a free program designed just for women.

Healthy Woman is designed to support a healthy mind, body and spirit for women – and the families they care for.

Smart’s abduction and recovery has motivated and continues to motivate parents, law enforcement and leaders worldwide to focus on children’s safety. She is an advocate for a child empowerment program called, radKIDS® which Tomball Regional Medical Center will offer classes for children aged 5-12 in the summer of 2013. RadKIDS®, Inc. has been committed to providing education that enhances the ability of children and parents to utilize knowledge, skills, and power to protect themselves from violence and harm.

Healthy Woman was created by women for women to provide up-to-date health care information for the entire family. The program’s mission is to empower women of Northwest Houston with the knowledge and confidence to make informed health care and well-being decisions for themselves and their loved ones.

Monthly Healthy Woman presentations cover physical and emotional health care, as well as financial well-being and spiritual development. Health care topics include pertinent information on heart disease, diabetes, breast cancer, menopause, nutrition, osteoporosis, stress management and life balance issues.

An advisory council composed of women throughout Northwest Houston community has been assisting the hospital in identifying topics of interest and promoting the program throughout the area. Puerto Vallarta – One of Mexico’s Best Cities

Mexico is a country full of surprises. The real Mexico is far more intriguing, enjoyable, and inviting than most Americans living north of the Mexican-American border would realize.

Mexico is full of charming enclaves, romantic restaurants, and enchanting experiences.

I recently traveled to Puerto Vallarta for a vacation of a lifetime. To be honest, Puerto Vallarta far exceeded my expectations. I stayed in Old Puerto Vallarta, which is the Zona Romantica. IF you want to experience Vallarta, sty in the Zona Romantica. It has charm, character, and local flavor. It is the real Mexico. It is a world apart from the condos in Nuevo Vallarta. Nuevo Vallarta could really be anywhere and nowhere at the same time. But Puerto Vallarta’s old town has a charm all its own. If you miss it, you haven’t been to Puerto Vallarta, really.

My favorite highlights:

The Puerto Vallarta Zoo – The Zoo is truly remarkable. I’ve never been to another zoo like it. It is truly the “best of the best” on my list. Here’s why: you get to hand feed and pet the animals! And I’m not just talking about a little petting zoo. Almost the entire zoo is a petting zoo!

I fed zebras, giraffe, flamingos, tigers, llamas and many other animals. It was a remarkable experience. The giraffe was especially friendly.

Oscars – This is an elegant and scrumptious restaurant with a relaxing, romantic ambiance.

The Malecon – a stroll down the Malecon is relaxing and like walking through an outdoor museum with beautiful sculptures.

Shopping – Puerto Vallarta has a nice array of shops, from cotton travel clothing specialty shops to Mexican mercado souveniers. You can find it all in P.V.

Locals – The local people are helpful, caring, and accommodating.

Puerto Vallarta is on the top of my list for travel in Mexico. Orale pues!

The Best of St. Louis

While most Northerners head South for the Winter, every once in awhile, a Texan will head North just to experience a “real Winter” for a few days.

If you are looking for a great place to escape the Winter blues and enjoy Winter bliss, we recommend St. Louis. St. Louis is a thriving metropolis often known for its love of sports. But there is so much more to St. Louis. And we made it our mission to find out what else is there.

To our delight, we experienced the “best of the best” of St. Louis over 5 days: snow, City and science museums, the zoo, a Winter garden, and yes, the Metro.

We flew on Southwest Airlines from Houston to St. Louis. When we arrived at the airport, we took the metro and it dropped us just a few blocks away from our hotel, the Drury Plaza Hotel at the Arch. The metro was clean, efficient, and cost-effective.

We enjoyed our stay at Drury Plaza Hotel for several reasons. The accommodations were clean and staff were attentive. The hotel has free wi-fi and an indoor pool and whirlpools. Each room contains a microwave and refrigerator, which we find helpful in case you want to store and reheat restaurant dinners or a snack. The beds were comfortable. The hotel also had a hot breakfast and pre-dinner snacks that were included with our stay. Our recommendation: as long as you stay in a non-smoking room/floor, you will have a pleasant stay. They originally gave away our room and put us in a smoking room. It was smelly and contained a rattly a/c unit which made it hard to sleep. Once they switched us to a non-smoking room, our stay was quite pleasant.

Our first day, we visited City Museum. This is one of St. Louis’ best attractions. You don’t want to miss it! This museum is truly unique; it contains man-made caves, a 7-story slide, and all kinds of jungle-gym like exhibits. It is very hands-on. In fact, it is so interactive that you need to wear jeans and tennis shoes to be able to explore it fully.

We traveled throughout St. Louis on the metro. To our delight, it was clean, efficient, and safe. (Not all metros live up to this standard, but St. Louis’ certainly does). We were even able to purchase a Metro Special Event wristband which allowed us unlimited travel including unlimited trips on the Downtown Trolley. Find out more about Metro St. Louis here.

 

All in all, these attractions represent the “best of the best” of St. Louis. We would recommend them to anyone.

Urbana 2012

Every four years, approximately 20,000 college students convene at the world’s largest Christian missions conference, Urbana.  Urbana 2012 brought the same appeal that it has contributed to Christianity’s mark on the world since it originally began in 1946.  Urbana is a testament to the fact that Christianity is alive and well in the world today.  It is quite moving and powerful to be in a sea of today’s young people who have gathered together to find out how God is calling them to serve Him in missions around the world.

This year, Intervarsity Christian Fellowship hosted Urbana 2012 in St. Louis, Missouri from December 27-31.

Conference highlights included:

Powerful Worship – What could be any better than packing into the Las Americas center with 20,000 college students singing out their hearts with love for Jesus?  Koreans, African-Americans and Latin Americans, among others, led worship.

Christians Who Give – And to know that they are Christians who are focused on giving, not just getting…No pew-warmers here.  Authentic, faith-filled believers seeking to live it out in mission with their entire lives.  What could be more beautiful or encouraging today?

Lately, the church has taken a detour, and it’s not a God-thing, either, and become way too self-focused.  What is God doing for me, lately?  the sermon goes…But at Urbana, the question always is the same: what is God doing in the world, lately, and what am I doing for God, lately?

This is the most important question…after all, God has done so much for us that getting involved in missions is our way of saying “thank you”.

Many are called, few are chosen.  We’ve all heard this message in the pews.  But I’ve always wonder why.  If you look at Scripture, you’ll find that God chooses to use the ones who make themselves available to Him, the ones who say, “Here I am, God.  Send me.”

Consider Mary.  God called her and selected her to be the vessel of Jesus’ incarnate birth.  She said “yes!”.  She willfully agreed to participate in God’s work in the world.  What if she had said no?

When people say “yes” to God and answer the call to missions, great things happen.  The road is never easy in missions, but the reward is truly eternal.  And I’m not talking prosperity gospel, either, the ‘ol, “God, I’ll do this for you so that You’ll do such-and-such for me.”

True, eternal rewards come from the intangible.  They are summed-up in my favorite verse: “Whatever is good, noble, praiseworthy, true, think upon these things” from Philippians 4:8-9.

When we think about what is good, praiseworthy and true and try to bring it into others’ lives, this is a significant accomplishment of missions.  It bears fruit, both spiritually and tangibly.  More people come to know Christ and His Word, and they often receive much-needed practical helps in the process, like basic education, food, shelter, fresh water, medical care, and other basic needs.

Urbana is truly a gift that keeps on giving.

Powerful worship, dynamic speakers, helpful missions resources, and networking with most of North America’s missions agencies…it’s another way Intervarsity Christian Fellowship empowers students to truly live their faith and serve God in their futures.

Good Journalism and Fair and Balanced Reporting

If you are a church-raised devotee of Christianity like me, you’ll be glad to know that Christianity is alive and well in the world today.  Sometimes I find myself wondering about the impact Christianity is having on the world.  I always hope it is alive and well.  But unfortunately, the media tends to gravitate toward favoring and focusing on “any religion but” Christianity unless they have disparaging news to report, such as the Catholic church sex scandals.  That is not my kind of news.

That is not the kind of news I look for, nor is it the only news.  Often, the best news gets left out, ignored, or tacked on as the 30-second feel-good story to wrap up the night.  As journalists, we have a responsibility to present fair, balanced reporting.  If you leave the good out, you’re not presenting the full story.

As a journalist, and a Christian journalist, specifically, my motto, creed, and mission is this:

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

That comes from a letter Paul wrote to the Philippians.  It was true then.  And it is still true today.  Those are real words for the wise.  And if we’re not writing copy and articles that will make our readers smarter, better, wiser, or more informed to be change-agents for good, what’s the point?

Yes, I will continue to report on the challenging and difficult issues of our time, human rights, human trafficking, the struggle for and emergence of democracies, and the world leaders who shape our times, including dictators and others who are wrecking other lives unnecessarily for personal gain…but my heart will always be where it always has been — hoping that when people read about these things, they are truly moved to participate in God’s redemptive work in the world. Shock and awe are not the goal…transforming our world for the better by what you know is.

Strive to be a good journalist.  It will be worth it.  The rewards are divine!

Christmas in Puerto Vallarta

Christmas in Puerto Vallarta is truly magical.  Snow?  No.  Presents?  Yes.  Christ’s presence?  Yes, yes, yes.

We all enjoy getting gifts at Christmas – and giving them.  But the best kind of Christmas is the one where we focus on the Giver more than the gifts.  If you’re looking for somewhere to go that will put the right kind of magic in your Christmas, Puerto Vallarta has a Christmas charm all its own that is unforgettable.

Christmas starts in Puerto Vallarta in early December with the Posadas.  A Posada is a reverent parade which honors Mary and Jesus.  Pilgrims make their way from their homes and the streets to the churches, as if they are on their way to see the newborn Christ.

Earlier this year, I was in Sri Lanka for the Perahara, where Sri Lankans reverently march in a parade carrying Buddah’s tooth relic through the streets for several hours with fire dancers and indigenous music.  Although completely different celebrations in their reasons for being, what they have in common is that they are parades of reverence.  We don’t have those in the United States.  I wish we did.

If you want to put Christ in Christmas, Puerto Vallart is the place to go.  You will find yourself surrounded by reverent, kind-hearted Christmas faithful who are more concerned with bearing gifts for the Giver than receiving from Him.

Parents, children, and single travelers will all be delighted by the beautiful Christmas charm Puerto Vallarta has to offer.  And no, I don’t sell property there or travel.  I’m just a fellow traveler wanting to put Christ in Christmas again.

Photographic Wonders – The Flower Insect

When is a flower not a flower? When it’s an insect! I saw this camouflaged compadre at the butterfly exhibit during a visit to the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

When’s an orchid not an orchid? When it’s a bug. Look closely and you will see it.  This orchid mantis has a great front row seat for dinner.

This is a good reminder that things are not always what they seem. And you have to look closely to see past assumptions. The delight is in the details!

The Nutcracker at Houston Ballet

If you want to enchant your little girl this Christmas, take her to the Nutcracker.  The Houston Ballet gives a masterful performance that will hold every little girl in awe.  The Houston Ballet is celebrating the Nutcracker’s 25th year.

I attended this same performance as a little girl with my mom 23 years ago.  It is remarkable to be able to enjoy this legacy and pass it down from generation to generation.  The characters are available after the performance to meet and take pictures with your little ones.

Stagecoach Ride at Fanthrop Inn

Stagecoach Ride at Fanthorp Inn Anderson TX

As the sun set over county courthouse in Anderson, the stagecoach glowed and twinkled as if it were Cinderella’s carriage of the Wild West.
We boarded a mule-drawn wagon and made our way to Fanthrop Inn. As we arrived, the candles glowed in the distance lighting our path and illuminating the inn. inside, local storytellers dressed in period attire relived the days of the Inn for us. We felt as if we Truly stepped back in time once we entered through the doors.
Fires warmed each room. Dulcimer players and square dancers entertained. And we enjoyed warm apple cider in the crisp night air under the great big Texas sky.
The evening was truly enchanting. But our most wonderful memory was yet to come.  The grand finale to our evening came as the mule-drawn stagecoach appeared decorated with red Christmas lights. We boarded the stagecoach and rode snugly with 8 passengers to the county courthouse. The stagecoach stopped in front of the Confederate Memorial where we disembarked and took a moment to reflect and give thanks for those who sacrificed their lives for the sale of our great land.
